About Home-Start Angus
Home-Start Angus offers a unique service to young families. We offer regular support at home to parents-to-be and to those bringing up pre-school children. Our organisation recognises that for all of us that are bringing up or have brought up young children it can be hard. We are never quite prepared for the emotional onslaught of parenting responsibilities and when other factors such as not living near extended family, experiencing poor mental health, relationship difficulties, becoming a lone parent, poor housing or battling to get help for a child that has additional needs, parents can find themselves feeling overwhelmed and guilty that they are not coping.
“I can’t put into words how much Home-Start Angus have supported my family over the years. I am extremely grateful for each and every member of the team”
We recruit, train and support volunteers with parenting experience. Many of them used Home-Start services themselves when they were bringing up young children and want to give something back. Our volunteers are sensitively matched with families referred to our organisation and undertake to visit them weekly for a few hours and offer an extra pair of hands, a listening ear or chumming up parents to help them make links with local services outside the home. The biggest difference they make however is through the relationship of trust they build with parents.
“I enjoy working with young children and hoped I could help and make a difference to the families I supported.” Volunteer in Angus
Home-Start Angus is affiliated to the national organisation, Home-Start UK, but we are autonomous and responsible for our own management and securing our own funding. Home-Start UK provides advice and support through a local Family Services Specialist and a stringent Quality Assurance review process ensures the scheme operates effectively.
We have 9 members of staff. A team of 40 volunteers visit families at home and help support parents at the family groups.
Family Groups
We also offer opportunities for parents and children to meet together through our Family Groups that run throughout Angus.
Management Committee
Home-Start Angus is an independent Charity managed by a Board of Trustees made up of local professionals (e.g. but not limited to Health Visitors, Teachers, Social Workers)
Our trustees come from all walks of life, bringing their experience and individual skills to our scheme. The kind of skills that are in demand are business or personnel management, finance and fundraising, IT and communications. But you don’t need special qualifications to be a trustee – common sense, flexibility, time and an ability to work as part of a team, a willingness to learn, understanding the pressures facing parents today and a genuine interest in supporting parents in the local community are just as important to us. Please contact us to find out more.
